Computing in the Libraries

Library Computers

Bailey/Howe Library makes over 200 computers available for the use of our patrons.

Types of Computers Available

• Desktops for UVM Affiliates

  Users must logon with their UVM NetID to gain access to productivity software suites such as Mathematica, Microsoft Office, Minitab, and SPSS.

• Public Access Terminals

  These Linux-based terminals are available to all library users for use of e-mail and the Internet.

• Desktops with Specialized Software

  These desktops are available to all library users with specific tasks to perform. The locations of these machines include Maps, Microforms and Special Collections.

Laptops in the Library

Library visitors are welcome to bring their own laptops and plug into our available network jacks.

• Cyber Cafe
• Second floor along the north wall opposite the main staircase

Requirements for network access

• Network card
• Network cable

  Network cables may be borrowed from the Bailey/Howe Circulation Desk

Printing from a Laptop to Library Printers

Library visitors are welcome to intall the Pharos Printing Solution to enable printing to library printers. Currently, this option is only available for Windows-based computers.

Wireless Networking

UVM's wireless networks (both Cat's PAWS and UVM) are available in a majority of the Bailey/Howe Library, however use of these wireless networks are restricted to UVM faculty, staff and students.

Requirements for wireless networking

• UVM NetID
• Wireless card (802.11b or better)
• AND either of the following:
  • UVM's VPN client software to connect to Cat's PAWS
  • OR a computer or wireless device configured for UVM, the new wireless service.
